Stick With Your Health and Fitness Goals
Hey everyone! With everything happening in the world, I think it is safe to say that we’ve all put on a little quarantine weight. Am I right? In April, I started to focus more on my health and fitness. I prioritized moving my body every day, drinking more water, and cooking better meals for myself. With a little pride, I can say that I have never been more consistent with health and fitness than I am right now. Let me tell y’all, it feels good. But I know, from experience, that sometimes we set goals for ourselves and have a hard time sticking to them. I am here with some tips for being more consistent with health and fitness! Lets. Get. Started.
set realistic goals
Realistic goal setting is essential. Do not try to lose 10 lbs in a week. Could you do it, I guess. Should you do it, no. If you keep slipping on your fitness journey, you should take a step back and make sure your goals are achievable. Perhaps your goal is possible in six months. However, it is hard to stay focused and motivated on something that will take you half a year to accomplish. Instead, find ways to break down that goal into smaller goals. Setting short term goals can build up to help you achieve that long term goal. If you have multiple goals, you are trying to accomplish, such as eating more greens, drinking six glasses of water a day, and walking every day. Instead of trying to achieve all of those things simultaneously, start with one thing at a time. Try to drink six glasses of water a day for a month; once you’ve accomplished that, add more greens. Once you’ve done both of those well, then add walking every day. Changes are much more challenging when everything happens at once.
find a buddy
If you take away anything from this article, this is what it should be. Having someone hold you accountable is one of the best ways to stay on track with your fitness goals! You probably won’t be motivated to move your body every day (unless you’re superhuman, in that case, good for you). Having another person means that you can both help each other on those days when you can not be bothered to work out. This buddy does not have to be one person either! You could have different buddies on different days of the week. I’ve had many fitness buddies, but currently, I’m working out with my mom! She is a great motivator—shoutout to you, mom.
sign up for classes
If your buddy bails on you, this is another excellent way to hold yourself accountable. Sign up for a class, especially one where you have to pay ahead of time! Paying ahead of time is a sure-fire way to make sure you actually go. Signing up for classes is also useful when you need to spice up your workout routine. Courses can challenge you to use muscles you do not typically use. Classes are also a great place to meet new potential work out buddies! If you have no idea what to sign up for, then TRY SOMETHING NEW. Boxing, pilates, hot yoga, Zumba, CrossFit, spin, or Orange Theory are all excellent classes to try. I just found out that you can take classes now where they attach you to some bungee ropes, and you fly around while you work out. HOW COOL IS THAT? That is what I will be signing up for next!
it’s okay to slip up
It’s okay to skip the gym. Everyone needs a cheat meal/day. You do not have to be perfect because no one is. Eating “cheat meals” and skipping the gym is bound to happen. Although I will say, once you slip up, it is tough to get back on track. When you are ready to get back on track, my advice is to call up your workout buddy. Make a plan, sign up for some classes, then go to the store and buy food that will nourish your body!
moving your body = happiness
It’s a fact that when you exercise, your body releases endorphins, and endorphins make you happy. (Okay, it is probably a little or scientific than that, but you get the gist.) If you find it hard to stick with your goals, then just do some form of exercise. The odds are you won’t regret it. If you’re feeling defeated or stuck, try to take a step back. Reevaluate your goals, clear your head, and take a walk. In my opinion, walking is the simplest form of exercise and can be the most fun if you have the right person to walk with. ;)
